Chinese Food Stole My Brain

I spent most of Tuesday and Wednesday with a headache. It started Monday night, really. I ate some ramen while I was sitting down to go over the math review for the GRE. I didn’t think anything of it. It’s just ramen. Some noodles and broth, whatever. My period just started, so when I started getting the headache, I didn’t really think anything of it. Just menstrual issues. I think I had ramen for lunch the next day. You see, a box of twelve packets is like, $5.00 or something. It’s ridiculously cheap and who can argue with a 3 minute prep time? Not this midwestern girl.

So Wednesday night rolled around and I finally got rid of my headache. Thursday passed without incident.

Joe showed up tonight on his way home to Lansing for the weekend. He suggested we go out to the Chinese buffet here in town and I thought it sounded like a pretty good idea, I needed a break from poring over stacks of vocabulary flash cards. We went and like usual, I ate far too much. When we got home, we watched a little TV and relaxed for bit. After a little while, I started to get a headache.

My mom had asked me during my previous bout of headachiness if I had been eating a lot of ramen. I told her I’d had some the previous day and then had some for lunch that day. She thought it might be the sodium that was wonking up my system, but when I mentioned that usually eating something salty and crunchy helps with my headaches, she mentioned that MSG may be the culprit. I kind of brushed it off and told her I figured it was probably that I was starting my period.

But after tonight, the MSG thing makes more sense. I did a little research and though mainly harmless, MSG has been known to cause headaches in people who are sensitive to it.

So no more ramen for me. At least until after I take the GRE on Monday. My head is Lame with a capital L.

But on the bright side, two of my letters of recommendation have been submitted.

I need a haircut.

Dear Internet,

I have a problem. I need a haircut, but I have no idea where to look for ideas. Google is far too vast and I keep finding mostly 80s inspired perms and bangs. It’s quite frightening. Where can a girl find really nice looking photos of haircuts that preferably do not pre-date my high school days.

This is what I’m working with right now. Or rather, what I am not working with.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Love,
Ms. Heather.

I believe there is probably a circle of hell reserved for people who dress animals up in outfits. But really? It’s one of the most entertaining things in the entire world.

You may notice there have been some minor changes around here. The basic layout is still Blix, a wonderful Wordpress theme by Sebastian Schmieg, but Joe gave it some new clothes. Some tweaking here and there on my part, and voila! You’ve got yourself a new layout. I’m pretty damned happy with it so far. Be sure to scroll ALL THE WAY DOWN for the superfun at the bottom. For the uninitiated, that’s Owen the Hippo and Mzee the tortoise. Mzee is ONE HUNDRED YEARS OLD. Jesus. Here’s a photo of them, just for you.

Thousands of years in the future…

I should never ever be able to watch or read anything that has to do with mathematics or science in general. Yesterday, my delicate understanding of the world took not one, but two blows. Wikipedia’s featured article was .999…. That is, .9 repeating. Where there are an infinite number of nines. They never stop. Ever. I’m still coming to terms with the fact that there are varying degrees of infinity and that the moon is moving away from the earth. But now I find out that .999…=1. I fully understand the simple proof given on the Wikipedia page. I can wrap my head around it, but I still can’t convince myself.

So, reeling from finding that out, I woke up around 3:00AM last night and found myself watching a NOVA special on PBS about the magnetic field of the earth. Did you know that it’s weakening? That it will eventually flip so that south becomes magnetic north? It’s happened numerous times in billions of years the earth has been around. As the magnetic field weakens, magnetic anomalies will begin to pop up all over the earth. The entire time I was watching, I kept screaming at the TV, “TELL ME WHAT THIS ALL MEANS FOR US!” They kept going on and on and on about how it will happen and what is signaling it and what not, but they kept putting off actually telling me what the hell was going to happen as a result. When they finally got around to it, I felt a little bit stupid. Apparently, the instances of cancer will increase, due to the fact that more cosmic radiation will reach the earth. But they won’t increase so much that it will be devastating. I mean, obviously any cancer at all is devastating, but we’re not looking at the extinction of human beings because of cancer. On the upside, seeing the auroras will be possible all over the world. That’s it. That’s all they think will happen.

And besides, it’s not due to happen for a few thousand years. But I still get to worry for the next sixty or seventy years. Joe gets to worry about the bird flu, and I get to worry about infinities, the moon, magnetic fields, .999…, and whether or not North Korea is going to blow us all to radioactive smithereens. Seems fair enough.

Also, I found this absolutely hilarious. (Note: The ae symbol in the IPA is called “ash” and resides further forward in the mouth than the other “a” in the inequality.) You’se a big fine woman….

OK. So, I don’t post very often anymore, so I’m going to make up for it by posting random photos that don’t have a whole lot to do with one another. Well, except for the ones from the zoo, because they were all taken at the zoo.

One of our cats, Jamaica, has taken to laying on a brown chair that I saved from a curb a couple of years ago. I’m pretty sure it’s because she color coordinates with it.
